The Story Behind Lumère

Lumère was born from a deeply personal inspiration. The brand’s name is a tribute to founder Mounir Sakho’s mother and draws from the French word “Lumière,” meaning “light,” symbolizing Mounir’s desire to spotlight African-American heritage through a luxury lens, redefining the global perception of African-American design. Lumère’s journey began when Mounir came across an African textile book created by his mother that held stories, colors, and patterns connected to his family’s roots.

As a first-generation American with roots in Guinea, Mounir grew up immersed in both his African heritage and the dynamic culture of New York City. These influences sparked the idea of a brand that would blend these elements—infusing luxury fashion with the depth of cultural legacy. Lumère’s story is about preserving nuances of tradition while presenting a fresh take on modern fashion.

Our Ethos

At the heart of Lumère is a dedication to celebrating and modernizing heritage. Each piece is crafted to be timeless, yet distinctively modern, incorporating subtle nods to tradition. Such as, our signature “palm red” color reflecting the palm oil and kola nut used in traditional African dyeing, anchoring each piece in Mounir’s heritage.

The brand’s ethos blends classic elegance with contemporary influences. Mounir’s upbringing in New York exposed him to the city’s diverse subcultures—luxury fashion, streetwear, skateboarding, and urban aesthetics. This mix is visible in Lumère’s designs, which balance the refined and the bold, creating clothing that feels both sophisticated and approachable.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Lumère is an extension of Mounir’s own creative journey. Self-taught and proud to credit “YouTube University” for his early design education, Mounir’s path has been anything but conventional. His journey includes designing a luxury store on Madison Avenue and managing high-end real estate projects, achievements he reached by age 22.

Mounir’s work is deeply connected to his family’s history in textile design, adding an element of craftsmanship that runs in his blood. Every Lumère piece reflects his commitment to quality and storytelling, celebrating his African heritage while embracing an upscale, global aesthetic.

A Look Inside the Design Process

Lumère’s designs are infused with cultural elements that have meaning and purpose. The African textile book that inspired Mounir serves as a touchstone in the design process, where textures and colors are chosen to represent stories of identity, tradition, and pride. You’ll find elements inspired by African fabric dyeing, as well as silhouettes and cuts that give a subtle nod to streetwear and urban styles, making each piece a blend of the familiar and the unique.

Each item is designed to reflect Lumère’s belief that clothing can be a vehicle for cultural storytelling. By honoring traditional influences while adding a contemporary twist, Lumère pieces invite clients to wear a story that’s both personal and universal.
